A look inside Gialmar's plants, branches and products.
These photos show the places and products behind every Gialmar order: the industrial units in Tondela and Lajedo, where fish is received, graded, frozen and packed, and the fresh fish that comes in daily from the fishing ports.
Gialmar's branches at Matosinhos, Aveiro, Figueira da Foz, Peniche, Sesimbra and the MARL wholesale market near Lisbon buy at the auctions every day. The map shows how the network covers Portugal's coast from north to south.

What happens behind these pictures
A typical day starts at the auctions, where branch buyers select fish and ice it straight away. Refrigerated trucks bring it to Tondela, where it is checked, graded and either dispatched fresh or sent to Lajedo for freezing, cutting and packing.
The same plants hold frozen stock of imported species such as squid, hake, Nile perch and monkfish, so customers can combine fresh and frozen products in one delivery.
Behind the photos is a team that knows fish: buyers who have worked the Portuguese auctions for years, plant staff trained to IFS Food standards and drivers responsible for keeping the cold chain unbroken.
